Background to Development
The holistic therapy services have been introduced into our service delivery based on 3 years very deliberate research and learning regarding how the complimentary therapies could assist in individuals managing their lives in general and in the world of their working lives / careers.
For more than twenty years I had worked in business with people and many individuals who were struggling in some way maintaining balance in their lives and work. In my passion of wanting to help to develop people to be the very best of themselves and to get the most from their lives in the broadest sense, (which is part of my own personal belief system about my own life), my path of development led me through developing people in the workplace and in their own business, onto life coaching so I could support in some of the challenges they had with work / life balance and time management issues. In my efforts to want to help people to put strategies in their lives to help manage down or alleviate stress factors I started to explore whether things like massage, reflexology etc had a place in peoples life and wellness plans.
What I found out in that research and subsequent practise astounded me – just how ‘complimentary’ these complimentary therapies were to my current service delivery to people regarding business leadership and management.
Through my studies I discovered how much illness and disease (over 75%) has stress as its main contributing root cause and how those causes of dis-ease come about. Stress has a really adverse effect on our immune system and damages it, this leaves us vulnerable to short term and long term illness. Being in high states of stress and tension releases cortisol into our systems and can lead to burn out, and our systems becoming out of balance. Negative emotions such as anger, low self esteem, emotional exhaustion, anxiety and fears all take their toll in lowering our resistance and weakening our bodies leading us into symptoms of depression, loss of sleep or appetite and leading to our reliance on externals comforters like drink, smoking eating etc.
This realisation led me into my current thinking around ‘wellbeing in the workplace’ as I had been dealing with people demonstrating all of the above day in and day out whilst working with them in the world of work. The reasons could be many, they included things like managing change, being presented with a ‘challenge’ that had gone on just a bit too long…. being on the receiving end of an undeveloped management style, or inappropriate behaviours as a management style. It made perfect sense to me that if we looked after employees in the widest sense that it would have positive impact not just on the individuals, it would also have a positive impact on the organisations that they work for. This leads to benefits regarding not just as tool to be used in reducing absenteeism, recruitment, retention and motivation of people would also be greatly enhanced.
