Wellbeing in the Workplace |
|
Is your organisation looking at ways to do the following:
- want to reduce absenteeism?
- need to recruit and retain good people?
- increase ways of motivating people?
- explore employee support programmes?
- be a leading and innovative employer?
- meet social responsibilities?
- improve upon your health and safety and human resource practices?
Based on research and development for the past three years Turnkey Solutions believes that Wellbeing in the Workplace is not a ‘nice to have’, it is most definitely a ‘must have’ from a pragmatic makes sense for organisations as part of their overall strategy for success.
Organisations are made up of individuals, who are part of teams that collectively make up the organisations workforce. If individuals are not performing at peak there are consequences over all. Business expects 100% from individuals and most companies do not have spare people roaming around to take up the slack through absenteeism, or through having people who are unable to perform at the level required, for whatever reason.
Business needs the very best from people in order to be successful in an ever increasing changing and competitive world. Not only that, people need to be working longer now because of the impact of pension / benefits / cost of living issues. Headlines such as
‘Work Till You Drop! Forget Retirement’ (Daily Express Sept 08) are not speculation for the future, they are already a reality with people having to work long past their expectation for retirement. Employers are coping with the effects of an aging workforce, we simply need to be fitter for longer in order to cope with the economic demands now placed upon us.
Government is now pushing for employers to take more responsibility when it comes to the health and wellbeing of individuals at work. It is not just about health and safety and prevention of accidents, it is about preventative methods overall when it comes to health.
People are living longer and if not working and paying their own way, they are a drain on the economy through benefits claimed. Do you know that research has show if a person is off work for more than 5 weeks, the chances of them returning to work are much less? This leads to a benefit situation that not only has economic impact, what about the societal impact on the individual through self worth, self esteem issues and on their families, both financially and emotionally?
Many organisations have already started to look at their strategy for wellbeing at work. Bringing together what is done between their health and safety and human resource practices and putting into place things like occupational health, changing menu’s to be more healthy in the canteen managing up nutrition and managing down obesity. Overall these introductions albeit positive and helpful are in the main adhoc, without a strategy or a means of measurement of the impact they have.
No Wellbeing in the Workplace Strategy is complete without also looking at the style of leaders and management in the business as well as other people practices. This is where Turnkey Solutions can help, not only looking at what the business does already in the widest sense, what else can it do? and how can it measure the effectiveness.
